The Tourism and Hospitality sector is one of the fastest growing sector in India rhythmic to its growth around the world. It offers scope for multiple enterprises and job opportunities within the expanding purview of this Industry. The studies reveals that the commercial possibilities of this sector still remains under-utilized when comparing the tourist’s inflow in the recent years and the growth of the tourism and allied industries. We turned our attention upon many peripheral industries that may work well with the hospitality eco-system. Search for such an enterprise ended up in the catering / food-vendor services. As it sounded potential in many respects especially in terms of generating scope for self-enterprise among the un-organized communities.

We ideally picked up a project for the SC women who are found apparently lying in the poor walks of life due to various reasons. Being identified that the food-vendor outlets under the scope of catering would be an ideal enterprise, we focused on the same in order to shape and organize this business in a scientific manor for making beneficial for the so-called back-ward women.
We knew that creating self-help groups among women may help them to constitute successful enterprising groups. This gave birth to the concept of “SHE SMART CAFÉ’. One of the major constraint in promoting tourism in Kerala is found to be the scarcity of trusted and reliable food outlet chains which can offer both contemporary and traditional food items to satisfy and relish the tourists.

The absence of a standardized food vendor network is certainly a necessary factor both the tourists and general public do rely on for their food requirements.
   
   HAVING BENEFICIARIES IN MIND
   
 
Being identified that economic freedom, and self-reliability together will contribute to the overall upliftment of the so-called backward communities, we have specifically designed the Project She-Smart café having the SC women community in mind.
   
   TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
   
 
We do believe that providing grants or collaterals alone could help the backward communities. Rather if we could impart a skill development education based on a vocational curriculum which shall certainly help them to build a career or help them becoming self-propelled entrepreneurs.

She smart café project is aimed to provide the self-help groups of women among the backward communities training in food & beverages production, basic business management lessons at micro level, basic IT skills and soft-skills.
   
   GREEN CONCEPT
   
 
The concept of SHE SMART CAFÉ helps to bring the beneficiaries under the roof of a large network of a trusted brand with the help of government supported project. Apart from the general concept, the She Smart Café opens avenue for an enterprise concept that ideally promotes the eco-friendly environment.

It aims to rely mainly on renewable source of energy generated by the solar panels which is mounted on the roof top on the café unit. It also aims to use the organically decomposable materials or recyclable materials to ensure the minimum environmental damage to the general habitat. The she Smart Café concept discourages the use of plastics and other polymer compound materials from the day to day usage. It is aimed to adhere to the waste management guidelines laid by the authorities and set itself as a model for the rest of enterprises in common. The she smart café concept is encouraging the waste water recycling however it could be subject to various circumstantial limitations faced by its location, budgeting, etc.
   
   THE SHE SMART CAFÉ
   
 
The concept of SHE SMART CAFÉ helps to bring the beneficiaries under the roof of a large network of a “trusted brand” with the help of a government supported project. It is ultimately aims to generate a creed of self-propelled women entrepreneurs through the exclusive training and development.

She smart café shall be recognized as a unique enterprise one of its kind which made breakthrough changes in food-vendor standards. Its compliance to environment standards makes it an ideal enterprise promoting green concepts.
   
   FOCUS ON PRIMARY BENEFICIARIES
   
 
The “She smart café” is aimed to promote the economic status of the SC women by creating self-help groups among them as it would contribute to develop the entrepreneurship and wellbeing of its target groups upon the project is focused. The concept “She Smart Café” also aims to standardize the entire street food-vendor standards by bringing the entire vendor services to a unified and recognized standards by adhering to the statutory rules and regulations binding the food & beverage Industry.

The she smart café aims to bring a large number of standardized café network in the entire state alongside the highways and at potential urban and rural locations. This enhances the availability of a reliable food for the general public and tourists alike. The café also ensures hygienically prepared foodstuff across all the vendor points in Kerala. This is achieved through a standardized operational method binding all the café units across Kerala which includes centralized purchase system, generalizing the menu, etc.
   
 
   
   PHASES OF THE PROJECT
   
  PHASE 1: IMPARTING TRAINING IN FOOD & BEVERAGES PRODUCTION AND SERVICE
 
A. The Initial step is to provide the Orientation classes to the targeted community and mobilize the candidates who aspire to become an entrepreneur.
B. Once the mobilization is complete the Authorities of the SRC and the SC Department officers of the respective districts have to approve the candidate after verifying their Proof of Eligibility Documents required to join the program ( community certificate, basic educational qualification Certificate & Government issued photo ID)
C. Imparting classes on the basics of Food & Beverages production and service as per the Qualification Pack based syllabus prescribed by the NSDC which conforms to the National Occupational Standards
   
  PHASE 2 : COMMISIONING OF THE SHE SMART GREEN CAFÉ UNITS
   
 
Once the self-help group completes the core training in Food & beverages productions and service along with Entrepreneurship Training, they are handed over the automated Café units. And it is their task to establish the café units at potential business locations identified by them.

The space occupied by them and the café fabricated in it, together confines the collateral or treated as capital goods provided by the Government in the process of converting them in to entrepreneurs. However the responsibility of finding the apt locations/space is vested with the self-help group.
 
A.
Fabrication of the Fully Automated café Units as per the specifications mentioned in the approved Specifications in the project.
B.
Developing Software’s required for the entire project operations including a centralized Administration Web portal and mobile Applications, Accounting & Billing Software’s.
C.
Handing over the individual units to the deserving SHG (Self Help Group)
D.
Providing Entrepreneurial Development Training to the candidates.
E. Providing Training on the front end software applications including Mobile Applications ( Billing, Accounting, & Inventory Management Software’s)
   
  PHASE 3 : CONVERGING TO A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL
 
Once the self-help group set up the their respective Café Units in the potential business locations and completes the EDP training along with the software training for billing, accounting & Mobile Applications, they can launch their business venture. And the Phase three comprises of the following important areas.
   
 
A.
Providing centralized monitoring & Administration support to the entire café network in the process of converging each units to a sustainable business Unit.
B.
Providing continual training support  in both Entrepreneurial Development Programs & Subject level programs to update each self-help group about the current Industrial Standards
C.
Arrange on-site training to each self-help group to improve their exposure to the Current Trends in the Industry
  A panel of experts would keep track of their business and help them correct their issues the year after the program.

Once the project is implemented, its benefits to general public, women in the SC Community and Gov. in general can be summarized as hereunder.

The general public & Tourists can rely on the café for the consumption of foodstuff that meets the food safety council standards in the respect of preparation & serving.
   
  BENEFITS TO THE SC CANDIDATES
 
SC community is regarded as relatively a weaker section in the society which needs economic upliftment by providing an opportunity to come to forefront of becoming an entrepreneur, the project can give an edge to the community with an edge of emerging themselves in to the clan of entrepreneurs.
   
 
A. Free Subject Training: The SC candidates are provided Intensive and systematic training in Food & Beverages Production & Service in the syllabus which conforms to the National Occupational Standards at free of cost. The successful candidates are entitled to get a dual certifications from State Resource Centre Kerala (SRC) as well as from the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC)
 
B. Free EDP (Entrepreneurship Development Program): The SC candidates are also benefitted from the Entrepreneurship Training towards becoming a Successful entrepreneur in order to prepare and make them competent to face any challenges in the Industry. The Self-help group is given extensive training in accessing and availing the financial support from various sources in order to meeting the working capital requirement and finding the expansion capital towards futuristic investments etc.
 
C. Capital Investment Support: SC woman community is getting a unique advantage of emerging in to the entrepreneurship without any capital investment as the cost of the entire unit is borne by the Government.
 
D. On-site Training at Prime Locations: The participants will be provided on-site training at prime locations like major hotel including other establishments under the Tourism & Hospitality Industry to keep them updated with the latest trends
  E. Insurance Protection: The entire Café units can be provided full cover Insurance protection for individual employees, and for the collateral properties
   
  ADVANTAGES FOR THE GOVERNMENT
  The key advantages that could be projected in favor of the government is as follows:
 
The she smart green café project helps the upliftment of the women in the SC community who stands relatively unorganized. They are provided help to attain the economic freedom and the edge of self-enterprise. This helps the government’s on-going projects for the community development. Thus the women in the SC community is helped to come to the forefront of the mainstream society.
A unit is run by a group of 5 women, for 100 units in the beginning 500 women can be given employment. This means Government can generate jobs for 500 women in 100 units offering a monthly salary of Rs.15,000 per each employee.
For 100 units @ 30 lakhs per unit a business development with the total turnover of 30 cores can be generated every year.
Food Vendors can be made accountable to the Government through this venture. Transparency in accounting of the business done by street vendors.
The small time food vendors can be brought under the purview food standards, Taxes and other government regulations on food safety.
By supporting this project, government would be help generating a productive economic community especially in the women empowerment project envisaged by the Country.
The she smart café project can support as a peripheral industry to support the tourism sector It will act as a first step towards bringing the entire food industry under the rule to ensure food safety and hygiene.
Supports General Public by ensuring the availability of the trusted café network which meets food safety council norms.
The success of the she smart café project will be a step ahead in the green initiative envisaged by the Government of India.
The government can deliver a very successful model of women entrepreneurship and development. This concept can be capitalized in other industries as well.
   
   SHE SMART CAFÉ – A LIVE EXAMPLE
   
 
It is certainly matter of pride to note that currently two she smart café units are successfully operating with prudent profits. The figures reveal that each individual beneficiaries are currently earning more than Rs.20,000/- every month.
Having proven a unique enterprise model, IIB Education and State Resource Centre Kerala (SRC) shared a number of government level recognitions with respect to the successful completion of this project. The most appreciated factor is the continued support provided by the IIB in its effort to help each business units attain a sustainable growth. The Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) along with small enterprise management helps them.

It is a matter of pride to say that two of such ‘she smart café’ units are functioning successfully in the city of Trivandrum where each unit is managed by group of 10 women from the SC community. As a recognition for this project the government authorities have further sanctioned another 30 units in line with this project in order to continue this mission of providing sustainable economic growth opportunities for the backward communities like the SC women community.
   
   A PROVEN SMART RESULT
   
 
Currently IIB in coordination with SRC Kerala, has been successfully completed the installation of two she smart café kiosks at two potential locations in Thiruvanthapuram. The she smart café kiosks have been handed over to the SC women beneficiaries.

It is certainly remarkable to note that each members of the She Smart Café’s self-help group has been earning a fair and reasonable revenue over rupees twenty thousand every month. Thus we could successfully prove that such projects orienting the upliftment of the backward communities can be implemented with transparency, efficiency and prudence.

The She Smart Café units shall be provided continued support from IIB and SRC till each café units attain the point od self-sustainability and attaining envisaged operational success.

The she Smart Café has been received various state level government appreciations for its successful implementation. Having convinced on the successful and proven business model, the concerned state government authorities have been granted their benevolent order to IIB for establishing another 30 numbers of She Smart Café’s in various location across Kerala. we do consider this as a recognition from the government for rendering the good work and orchestrating their capacities to establish proven business models for the benefit of the targeted communities.
